Dance of the Market Women at Viktualienmarkt

The dance of the market women is the highlight of the carnival revelry in Munich. It takes place once a year at Viktualienmarkt on Shrove Tuesday at 11 a.m. Today it belongs to the established tradition of Munich’s city history. Already at the beginning of the 20th century the market women dressed up and danced in front of their own stalls or with market women from neighboring stalls until the end of carnival on Ash Wednesday. In 1987 the tradition was revived to a great extent: since then each time twelve market women present themselves with the present mayor and the Narrhalla (Munich carnival society) on stage. Already months before they practice their new dances at a dance school and perform each year in imaginative and self-made costumes which relate to the market place.
